You will find one thing missing in this book that most of the books on health and well-being offer in abundance.

Toxic Positivity.

The world has become too prescriptive. Especially when it comes to health, people love “remedial” options. For instance, consuming statins to lower cholesterol is preferred over lifestyle changes. Insurance is offered when things “happen”. There is little or no financing for “not letting things happen”.

The preventive approach needs a mindset change. Perhaps a change in lifestyle or beliefs. Not so easy for many. Over the years science has revolutionized remedial approaches. Fixing your broken hip or dealing with a pandemic. Easy.

However, the remedial approach has its limitations. It has not been effective in dealing with the four modern horsemen of death; Cancer, Diabetes, Alziemers (neurological disorders), and Cardiovascular diseases. Peter Attia, author of Outlive argues that science is not equipped to deal with “Slow” death.

We are too anxious about “Fast Death”, accidents, falls, and infections. These are rare events. What isn’t rare in the modern world is “Slow Death”. It is just around us, hidden in plain sight. Lingering and inching towards victory as every day passes. Dealing with Slow Death needs deep systems thinking.

Given such a challenge, “Outlive” becomes a must-read.
