David always had the upper hand in his battle with Goliath the Giant.
It doesn’t fit the narrative we all have been hearing, right?
We always consider David to be at a great disadvantage in the battle with Goliath the giant.
What we actually miss out on is the context.
If you add a little context here, you will push your imagination to think that David indeed had the upper hand.
In his book, David and Goliath: Underdogs, Misfits and the Art of Battling Giants, Malcolm Gladwell shares that David was an expert slinger, on the other hand, Goliath was a heavy Infantryman. Sword vs. Pistol. fair?
While Goliath challenges David for hand-to-hand combat, David pays no heed (smart move). Everyone knows the aftermath.
It was a battle of well-aimed projectiles and a giant who wasn’t agile enough to miss those. Gladwell goes on to explain at what speed the stone must have hit Goliath. More context, more clarity.
We often miss out on context in our routine lives too: Why is someone promoted? and why does someone fail? Why is someone so incompetent?
We like to reason these out without gathering context. Add a little context and see if the perception in your mind changes.
